This course starts in September, and can be taken either full-time for a full year, or part-time (for adults only) one day per week for 50 weeks.
This course will provide you with the vital hands-on skills and understanding needed for a professional career in dog grooming. To be successful at this level, independent study skills are also essential.
You will need to have gained a Distinction grade on the Dog Grooming Assistant Certificate (Level 2) and also have a FS Level 2/GCSE grade 4 in Maths and English, or evidence of working within this level.
During this course you will learn and acquire all the important skills and knowledge that are needed to work as a professional dog groomer. You will also need to invest time in independent study in order to be successful.
You will learn:
- health and safety, as well as codes of practice and legislation for working in the dog grooming sector
- first aid for dogs
- canine anatomy and physiology
- styling different breeds of dogs and finishing techniques
- planning your work, trimming and styling
- different methods of trimming, depending on the type of coat
- suitable and safe techniques to handle and restrain dogs
- checking the health of dogs
- recognising and understanding behaviour of dogs
- customer service, communication, and record keeping
You are required to complete a 15 day work placement within the dog grooming industry. You are also required to secure an industry placement in a grooming parlour, one day per week during your course.
Once you have completed this course successfully, you will be fully-qualified as a dog groomer. You will then be able to work as a dog groomer in an existing salon, open your own parlour or run your own mobile grooming unit.
You could also choose to follow further training to specialise and develop your acquired skills.
